The exhibition explores the flag as a family keepsake in the 19th century, the Smithsonian Institution’s efforts to preserve the artifact since 1907, and how Americans have used the Star-Spangled Banner-both the flag and the song-to express diverse ideas of patriotism and national identity. The lyrics come from 'Defence of Fort M'Henry', a poem written on September 14, 1814, by the then 35-year-old lawyer and amateur poet Francis Scott Key after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry by British ships of the Royal Navy in Baltimore Harbor during. An interactive table with a tactile image allows visitors to investigate key details of the flag and how it was made. 'The Star-Spangled Banner' is the national anthem of the United States. The almost 200-year old, 30-by 34-foot flag is displayed in a special environmentally-controlled chamber. Exhibit A in critics’ account is the anthem’s seldom-sung third verse, which gloats at the defeat of the band who so vauntingly swore America would lose its independence: No refuge could. After a century of general use, the four-stanza song was officially adopted as the national anthem by an act of Congress in 1931. To me, this is what our nation’s anthem, The Star. The truth is you don’t have to be an American Soldier to fight for what is morally and ethically right. When you hear this song, and it makes you FEEL, you know you’re a true patriot. Upon entering this exhibition, visitors are immersed in the Battle of Baltimore, which inspired Francis Scott Key to write his famous lyrics. The Star-Spangled Banner, national anthem of the United States, with music adapted from the anthem of a singing club and words by Francis Scott Key. To some people, the National Anthem: The Star Spangled Banner means something that touches their heart.
